Teradata Enhances Visualization Capabilities of Big Data Platform
Updated · Feb 20, 2013
One of the top 10 business intelligence trends for 2013, based on interviews with experts conducted by Enterprise Apps Today, is the emergence of the data analyst, a kind of cross between a data scientist and a business analyst. George Mathew, COO and president of Alteryx, defined this role as “specialists who can bridge the gap between IT and business by evolving their core thinking and approach to analytics decision-making.”
Another trend, predicted by Steven Hillion, chief data officer for Alpine Data Labs, is simplified Big Data tools, the kinds of tools you don't have to be an engineer or a data scientist to use.
Teradata today introduced the Teradata Aster Discovery Platform 5.10, a solution that seems to fulfill both predictions, with its promise to simplify analysis of Big Data. According to the company, the platform has more than 20 new Big Data analytic capabilities, including purpose-built visualizations. Teradata promises that any SQL-savvy analyst or business user will find it easy to use.
Key enhancements within the Teradata Aster Discovery Platform include:
Visual SQL-MapReduce Functions – According to Teradata, these functions offer capabilities that generate purpose-built data visualizations coupled with other Aster SQL-MapReduce analytical functions generated inside the database. The functions complement business intelligence functionality.
For example, customer behavior patterns, graphs and product affinity can be instantly visualized. “These functions complement your existing BI solution by extending the types of information you can visualize without adding the complexity of another BI deployment,” wrote Tasso Argyros, co-president at Teradata Aster, in a company blog post.
In-Database “R” Execution Capability – Teradata integrated the open source statistical language R inside the Teradata Aster Database. The integration gives SQL-savvy analysts or business analysts the ability to leverage Aster’s massively parallel processing (MPP) platform to score statistical models on Big Data.
Support for In-Database PMML (Predictive Model Markup Language) execution via Zementis – Tight integration between predictive analytics software from Zementis and Teradata Aster Database empowers business analysts to develop statistical models in tools of their choice. Analysts can export and import the statistical models in Aster to take advantage of Aster’s MPP platform to score models at scale, according to Teradata.
In-Database Integration of Attensity capabilities – Attensity’s text and sentiment analytic capabilities are being integrated inside the Aster Database. This allows users to combine text and sentiment analytics with other analytical techniques including SQL-MapReduce functions and Visual SQL-MapReduce Analytics.
Manufacturing and Financial Services Industry Analytics – The platform offers integrated SQL-MapReduce functions designed for manufacturing and financial services companies. Analytics for the manufacturing industry are geared toward improving processes that increase yield and reduce waste, while analytics for financial services are designed to help companies quickly detect fraud and customer defection.
Teradata Aster Discovery Platform 5.10 will be available by the end of second quarter 2013.
