SAP Unveils HANA Enterprise Cloud
Updated · May 08, 2013
SAP on May 7 announced HANA Enterprise Cloud, opening up a high-performance, cloud-enabled deployment option for organizations that are already invested in – or are mulling — the company's business software ecosystem.
HANA is SAP's fast-growing in-memory computing platform. The technology relies on IT systems that house much more RAM than typically found in computer servers. Combined with today's potent server processors, the technology enables data, including entire databases, to “reside” closer to the CPU on components that deliver high I/Os.
Since data is spared the trip across disk-based storage subsystems and infrastructures, the result is fast, often near-instantaneous application performance that brings businesses a step closer to operating their enterprises in real-time and delivering responsive, zero-wait experiences to mobile device users.
Now SAP is delivering those capabilities as a subscription-based solution.
Key to HANA Enterprise Cloud is its ability to slash the time it takes to get set up with in-memory tech, indicated SAP Chief Marketing Officer Jonathan Becher during a press event in Palo Alto, Calif. Since HANA's inception, SAP has been constantly confronted with the question, “How can I rapidly adopt HANA?” To help customers can get up and running quickly, at least compared to rolling their own HANA environments, SAP is offering a comprehensive assessment, advisory, onboarding and migration services to guide them through the process. Then, all that's left is for customers to pay the monthly subscription fee.
“Customers want more and more options in how they take advantage of the value SAP HANA brings. With the SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud, we are delivering HANA at scale with instant value and no compromise,” said SAP Technology and Innovation Executive Board member Dr. Vishal Sikka in a statement.
The company also signaled that SAP HANA Enterprise is ready for the Big Data demands of today's businesses. “Going forward, running mission-critical SAP ERP, SAP CRM, SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse and new and unprecedented applications powered by SAP HANA will be possible as a managed cloud service with elastic petabyte scale,” boasted the company in press remarks.
What about non-SAP apps? SAP co-founder Hasso Plattner took to the stage and announced, “HANA is not just for SAP. It's actually the other way around.” Suggesting that his company's technology can provide an in-memory boost to the enterprise software market at large, Plattner added that “we have more HANA customers for non-SAP applications” than for the company's own software.
