Altiris Releases Three New Product Suites for SMS
Updated · Sep 06, 2001
Altiris, Inc. released 3 new product suites this week that natively extend and enhance Microsoft's Systems Management Server (SMS) functionality. The new Altiris SMS product suites include Mobile Client for SMS; Unix Client for SMS; and Helpdesk for SMS, the first Web-based helpdesk solution specifically designed for SMS.
Mobile Client for SMS gives Microsoft SMS administrators the ability to manage their remote and mobile systems as effectively as their LAN clients. With support for Windows 95, 98, and 2000, the Mobile Client offers robust inventory and software delivery capabilities as well as Web administration and Web reporting.
From the Altiris press release, “Customers want great solutions to manage their mobile environments and reduce total cost of ownership,” said David Hamilton, director, Product Management, Microsoft Corp. “The combination of Systems Management Server and Altiris' Mobile Client for SMS provides a complete solution for mobile and remote users running Windows-based environments.”
Helpdesk for SMS, the second new product release, allows SMS administrators and helpdesk workers to access trouble ticket history and all SMS functions, including remote control, from any Web browser. The new product has been significantly broadened to include request, problem and change management features and a handheld interface for added management flexibility.
Helpdesk for SMS has a self-help interface that allows end users to enter trouble tickets, track the status of issues and/or view bulletin updates from the help desk and submit comments on their customer service experience.
Finally, the Unix Client for SMS extends SMS management and functionality to heterogeneous Unix systems. This enables all asset information to be stored in a single inventory database with one infrastructure throughout the enterprise. Unix administrators can manage their systems from any Unix system with a Web browser and IT managers can view Web reports from their desktop.
All three of the new suites include an updated version of Altiris Web Admin for SMS that gives administrators access to all SMS functions from any Web browser. The new version of Web Admin for SMS also allows access to SMS functions through a Windows CE or Pocket PC device, giving customers even more flexibility when managing SMS workstations.
Again, from the Altiris press release, “These new product suites allow customers to capitalize on their investment in SMS,” said Poul Nielsen, vice president, Product Strategy, Altiris Inc. “They include one of our hallmark technologies which is native SMS integration. This means that SMS administrators have only a single infrastructure to manage. The ROI is immediate because SMS administrator and helpdesk workers do not have to be tied to their desktops to access SMS functions. In addition training costs are reduced as well as the time it takes to complete tasks.”
