HP has made a move in the business analytics space with the announcement of a signed a definitive agreement to acquire Vertica, a Billerica MA-based, privately held, real-time data warehousing and analytics platform company. As reported on eChannel Line, Vertica's core product is the Vertica Database, a massively parallel processing column-oriented database based on the C-Store column-store database project led by database pioneer and Vertica founder Michael Stonebraker at MIT.
“Vertica, which was founded in 2005, had something of a reputation as a high-flyer among the independent database companies. While privately held, it claimed that it made huge strides in 2010, increasing both its revenues and customers by over 100 percent. It also claims to be profitable. The company now has over 300 customers across a variety of industries, including Groupon, Twitter, Verizon, AOL, Guess!, Zynga, Playdom, Bank of America, BlueCross BlueShield, AdMeld, Sunoco, Mozilla and Comcast.”
