MapR Intros Hadoop App Store
Updated · Jun 04, 2014
The app store is gaining traction in the enterprise. And no wonder: As Tibco Software founder John Mathon points out on his Cloud Ramblings blog, enterprise app stores can help IT departments better manage the rapidly growing number of apps, on desktops and especially mobile devices.
By 2017 a quarter of enterprises will use an app store to manage their corporate-sanctioned apps, Gartner has predicted. A growing number of vendors, like IBM, now offer them. Some vendors are building stores with a particular focus, such as CliQr Technologies' repository for open-source apps intended for cloud deployments.
MapR Technologies, provider of a popular distribution of Apache Hadoop, this week introduced a Hadoop application gallery. The MapR App Gallery, which includes ready-made Big Data utilities and applications from MapR's Hadoop ecosystem partners, aims to help companies derive greater business value from Big Data.
“Our customers typically run many different applications on a MapR cluster and the App Gallery makes it much easier and faster to achieve success,” said Jack Norris, chief marketing officer, MapR Technologies, in a statement. “There is already a broad range of applications available, and we anticipate the number of applications will grow — particularly those leveraging unique capabilities that enable customers to better optimize revenue, control costs and mitigate risk.”
According to MapR, the App Gallery includes administrator-oriented apps for provisioning, management and security; developer-oriented applications, query engines and frameworks; and analyst-focused applications for business intelligence and machine learning. App Gallery contributors verify that their apps interoperate with the MapR Distribution and provide documentation and support information for each application.
Current partners and solutions include:
- Database: Hadapt, HP Vertica, Rainstor and Splice Machine
- Analytics and Data Integration: Alpine Data Labs, Appfluent, Data Tactics, Datameer, DataTorrent, Informatica, Information Builders, Jaspersoft, Pentaho, Platfora, Revelytics, Revolution Analytics, Syncsort, Tableau and Talend
- Search: Elasticsearch and LucidWorks
- Machine Learning: 0xdata, Skytree and Zementis
- Management and Security: Dataguise, Splunk, StackIQ and Voltage
“Talend is working closely with MapR to provide best-in-class data integration solutions, natively optimized for enterprise Hadoop environments,” said Francois Chiche, VP global alliances at Talend, in a statement. “The MapR App Gallery serves as an online destination to help customers understand how a variety of Hadoop technologies can be put into production to optimize Big Data analysis.”
MapR is used by more than 500 customers across financial services, retail, media, healthcare, manufacturing, telecommunications and government organizations. Amazon, Cisco, Google and HP are part of the broad MapR partner ecosystem.
