SAS is leaving nothing to chance when it comes to in-memory Big Data analytics, according to Jim Davis, the company's senior vice president and chief marketing officer.

“SAS has ramped up R&D on our high-performance analytics family,” says Davis in a company statement. As a result, the company has embarked on across-the-board updates to its SAS High-Performance Analytics Server.

Unsurprisingly, given Hadoop's skyrocketing popularity, the company paid particular attention to the open source Big Data platform. In March, the company embraced Hadoop for its Enterprise Data Integration Server. Today, the company's in-memory analytics platform is getting expanded Hadoop support.

“These latest enhancements, including additional support for Hadoop and HDFS, make it easier to achieve value from Big Data,” Davis says.

Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) is a fault-tolerant file system that enables high throughput access to application data using commodity, low-cost hardware. With HDFS support, SAS High-Performance Analytic Server can now open up its predictive modeling capabilities to a growing Hadoop ecosystem.

For Big Data appliance and software maker Greenplum (a division of EMC), improved Hadoop support will paves the way to greener analytics pastures, according to Josh Klahr, vice president of Products.

“The enhanced SAS High-Performance Analytics Server with Hadoop support running on Greenplum delivers a superior analytics environment, allowing customers to extract insights from vast amounts of data. Greenplum will continue working with SAS to create optimized Big Data platforms that deliver timely results and excellent customer value,” says Klahr.

SAS reports that it has also made strides in processing text data on appliances from Greenplum and Teradata. As a result, SAS Enterprise Miner users can generate faster models on large data volumes, according to the company.

Newly-enabled SAS Text Miner provides in-memory-boosted content analysis for large document collections and social media. Rounding out the SAS High-Performance Analytics Server are optimizations that enhance the company's SAS/OR operational research software.
