WordPress is Now the Most Widely Deployed Content Management System on the Internet
Updated · Mar 07, 2018
One of the cornerstone of modern enterprise applications for the past decade has been the content management system (CMS) market. While there are many players in the enterprise CMS space, one name stands alone as the dominant CMS across the internet: WordPress.
The open-source WordPress CMS is now used to power 30.0 percent of the internet, according to a March 2018 report by W3Techs. The 30.0 percent share is an increase of 0.6 percent since February of 2018.
What is perhaps even more remarkable is how far ahead WordPress is of every other technology for CMS adoption. The second place market share is held by rival open-source CMS project Joomla at 3.1 percent, followed in third by the open-source Drupal project at 2.2 percent.
Going a step further, the W3Techs analysis shows that WordPress commands a 60.2 percent share of all websites that use any form of CMS.
WordPress can be downloaded and used for free by anyone from WordPress.org, and there are also multiple options for hosting. The WordPress.com site, which is operated by Automattic, the lead commercial sponsor of the open-source WordPress project, provides users with a hosted platform.
Multiple other firms also provide commercially supported hosting platform for WordPress. Among the largest is WP Engine, which announced on Jan. 5 that it had raised $250 million to help grow its WordPress-powered platform.
The most recent version of WordPress is currently the 4.9.4 update, with development underway for the WordPress 5.0 milestone.
